Amendments to 'Fragments of Mine and Mill in Wales' Page44 The "right-angle" construction of Hollands drum
was a unique example of a construction method originating in Mesapotamia
that much predates the use of spokes. It calls for less skill than a spoked
layout. Skill would not have been lacking when this drum was made, but
it would have been cheaper and easier. Page 67 The Saw is at Llanllawen Fawr quarry NOT Dinas Garreg Jasper quarry (Mrs C Jones Llanllawen) WERN GRON MILL SH609284 This was a tannery, one of the three buildings
being the "Tanbark house" where bark was finely ground. The
production of bark either by 20-25 year coppicing of oak or stripping
trees a year ahead of felling was an important adjunct to leather production,
usually carried on by women and girls. The water-wheel driven "grindstone",
a slate disc 5' 8" dia x 6 ½" weighing over a ton, is
still in the building, possibly the sole surviving example of such a slate
artifact. It may have orginated at Cae'n y Coed quarry SH681408.
