Page44 The "right-angle" construction of Hollands drum was a unique example of a construction method originating in Mesapotamia that much predates the use of spokes. It calls for less skill than a spoked layout. Skill would not have been lacking when this drum was made, but it would have been cheaper and easier.

WERN GRON MILL SH609284 This was a tannery, one of the three buildings being the "Tanbark house" where bark was finely ground. The production of bark either by 20-25 year coppicing of oak or stripping trees a year ahead of felling was an important adjunct to leather production, usually carried on by women and girls. The water-wheel driven "grindstone", a slate disc 5' 8" dia x 6 ½" weighing over a ton, is still in the building, possibly the sole surviving example of such a slate artifact. It may have orginated at Cae'n y Coed quarry SH681408.
